Abstract Historically society has placed more attention on the unmarried woman as opposed to the unmarried male, which is reflected in the lack of research on male bachelorhood. This paper presents an analysis of the reason that gives professional men of medium socioeconomic level of Mexico about his singleness. We conducted a qualitative research, with semistructured interviews in seven participants between 32 and 49 years old.

La semana pasada, una amiga tuvo una cita. Mala idea. El hombre con quien salió estuvo casado tres veces y tenía un hijo de cada esposa. Así y todo, esta andoba preguntó a mi amiga -soltera y sin hijos- por qué había acabado en la vida. Fue una alusión corta. Los solteros también pueden arrepentirse eso sobre otros solteros y sobre ellos mismos. Se supone que nada debe ser soltero. Y no únicamente ahora.
